| Memorial Day
| Dear Friends, The Sell family burial plot is located in the yard of a little church up in the hills of West Virginia. My parents are buried there. So are a smattering of other Sells from prior generations. I suspect that it is pretty much a completed plot as the current generations have all moved away and established new roots.
But, when I was a child, my father would always go out there by himself on this week-end to "clean up the place." That usually consisted of cutting the grass, leaving some rhododendron and pausing to remember, reflect and pray.
Of course, Memorial Day is about honoring those who have served in our military, and, especially, those who gave "their last full measure of devotion." I have lived much of my life in Navy towns and I do so respect the sacrifices service people and their families make on our behalf. They are, every one of them, saints, in my book.
But it is also about pausing to remember, reflect and pray for all the saints of our lives who have made it possible for us to dwell in peace and plenty. best love,

Outlined below is an overview of what we have accomplished so far as well as some insight into the next steps in the process of calling our new Rector. What we have accomplished so far: In November, we received a list of 39 potential candidates that met the criteria set forth in our Profile. As of March 1, the group of candidates was narrowed down to 9. During March, members of the committee conducted phone interviews with the references provided to us by each of the 9 candidates. In early April, the committee identified 5 candidates for further consideration. Teams of three committee members recently visited each of the final 5 candidates in their hometowns where they had the opportunity to interview and get to know the candidates personally as well as visit their respective parish. The committee has now selected a final group of 4 candidates that will be invited to Trinity to meet with the entire Discernment committee. So what are the next steps? · During the next few weeks, the four candidates will visit Princeton to interview with all members of the discernment committee. We expect these visits will be completed by early June. · We still hope to make our recommendation to the vestry so that they can call our new rector by summer of 2008. We will continue to inform you of our progress as we move forward. · Please note that while information pertaining to our process and progress towards calling a new rector is transparent, the names of potential candidates at any stage along the way are highly confidential and will not be disclosed under any circumstances. | | Commentary on this week's Readings by Allan King | Today Jesus is giving us some instructions as how we are to live in the post-Resurrection world. Now that we have come to the season of Pentecost and to the living out of the Gospel, Jesus wants to be sure that we know how we are to behave and what is expected of us as God's servants. He starts off by saying that no one can serve two masters. This is a truism in our experience. You cannot have two bosses. For sure, you will please one and displease the other. You will be torn between them. You will become dysfunctional as a human being. Jesus identifies 'wealth' as one of the masters we may be serving rather than Him. This is a very hard teaching for most of us to accept. We live in a society of great wealth and are brought up to work for and acquire even more wealth. Most people think it is a very good thing to provide for ourselves, for our old age and for our descendents. Yet Jesus seems to tell us not to be concerned about what we will drink, or eat or wear as clothing. He is not saying that wealth is bad in itself, however. It is an unhealthy lust for wealth, or food, or clothing that stands in our path and prevents us from striving for the Kingdom of God as we should. What each of us must ask is just this: 'Where do I stand with respect to the longing for wealth? What must I work on in my life if I'm to stand a little looser to the things of this world? How do I live for today, and not let everything be determined by my hopes and plans for the future?" Jesus reminds us that tomorrow will have problems enough of its own. | Envision: The Gospel, Politics, and The Future A National Conference at Princeton University. | | About Our Photo Displays outside Pierce Hall and in the Reception Area | | Our photo displays serve many purposes ("We need housing for British choir members"; "We want you to join a walkathon"; " We think you'd be a great acolyte", etc.), but they are especially useful if you are a NEWCOMER and don't know who's who. We don't recognize everyone, so we need you to take that extra effort and INTRODUCE yourself to the names in the photographs and TELL US if we didn't get your name up on the wall and your photo is there. Please pick up a yellow phone directory of the parish members in the reception area and use it to match names to phone numbers. Finally, if you haven't found your niche in this parish, remember that we all started new here at Trinity. Only you can make that phone call. Take that leap, or walk up to any vestry member (all vestry members are sworn to being great communicators for Trinity and they can introduce you ),and say something like "I think I could handle being an usher once every six weeks"
Vestry member Alison Horsburgh will be looking for volunteers for Trinity's table at 2009 Communiversity in Princeton. She is a mother with two children under the age of six. She's from Scotland! She's married to the Rev. Gordon Graham. You can email her at gordon.graham@ptsem.edu
